Revisiting QT and Bobby Rodriguez's first Grindhouse collaboration with Reed Rothchild
From Dusk Till Dawn (Dir. Robert Rodriguez): The best part about doing these genre marathons is revisiting those forgotten classics that you haven't seen in years. I've always been a Dusk Till Dawn fan, but recently realized It had been at least five years since I'd seen it. If you haven't seen this in a while please do so because it holds up very well and is one of the best horror films of the 90's.

Halloween Bash with Reed Rothchild's Movies and other Epic stuff, Checking out an 80's classic starring that old dude from The Terminator
Pumpkinhead (Dir. Stan Winston): I'd been meaning to check this one out for years since it always seems to land on best of horror lists. The one thing you can always count on with 80's horror classics is that the special effects will deliver. No matter how cheesy the acting and dialogue may be I am always thoroughly impressed with how good the makeup effects are. You just don't see this kind of time spent on many horror films these days and it really does make a big difference. Even some of the weaker films from the 80's are infinitely watchable just for one or two "holy shit moments" usually do to killer special effects.
The film starts off with a flashback from the 50's where we look on as a little boy watches his older brother get killed by some monster deep in the woods. In present day the little boy, now a father takes his son to their farm stand off of the highway to sell groceries. A rowdy group of teenagers heading up to a cabin for the weekend (totes original scenario I know) stop by the store for some provisions and tragedy strikes when one of them accidentally runs the little boy over with his dirt bike. The distraught father Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen) travels deep into the woods to find an old hermit with special powers to bring his son back to life. He is told the only way to bring his son back is to raise the evil Pumpkinhead from the grave. As one would expect, shit hits the fan from there...

Halloween Bash, With Reed Rothchild's movies and other epic stuff
Hell Baby (Dir. Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon): It's that time of year again folks. This time there's no lengthy intro or anything. Simply put- I'm once again going to watch one horror film a day for the entire month of October and then review it here for you so you don't have to wade through all of the feces to find that epic horror gem. So without further ado let's get fapping... I mean started!
I'd been really looking forward to this flick ever since I read about it getting really great reviews at Sundance. I've always been a huge fan of The State (though now I realize a lot of that is nostalgia) so I was really happy to see that Tom Lennon and Ben Garant had gotten together to write something they were really passionate about. Up until now they had been paying the bills writing shitty teen and family movies like The Pacifier and Herbie Fully Loaded. Luckily it was worth the wait because Helly Baby delivers the goods!

Halloween Bash...With Reed Rothchild Jessica Biel and quality horror= boners for days..
This was one beautiful atmospheric puzzle. Laugier has created this depressed community the oozes fear and uncertainty. Even though there are miles of land everything just feels claustrophobic and urgent. The twists come out of left field and previous occurrences take on a completely different meaning. Halfway through the second act you kind of figure out where it's going, but you'll never be able to figure everything out. This film is not only tense, but it's also very moving. By the end I really wasn't sure who the good guys or bad guys were. All I know is that I haven't seen a horror/suspense film this powerful in a while. Laugier is one talented director that knows how to manipulate your emotions and create tension. This one comes highly recommended. Even Biel wasn't terrible acting wise.
Funny or Scary: Very chilling stuff and it makes you think.
Scariest Scene: When Julia chases after her son in the abandoned warehouse
Overall Corpse Rating: 7.5 blown away corpses.

Halloween Bash...with Reed Rothchild...There was no better time for kids movies than the 80's.
If that doesn't sound like a fun premise for a kids movie then I guess you have no imagination. In case you had any doubts this holds up really well. The special effects look terrific considering they're over 25 years old and them monsters' makeup is amazing as well. The really cool thing about this movie is that it was kind of a re-introduction to the Universal Monsters from the 30's. It was the first time I ever saw any of the classic monsters on the big screen and I'm sure it was the first time for others my age as well. The monsters all look great and stand up to the high standards set forth in the original films they appeared in years ago. The kids in this are pretty great as well. There's a bit of overacting, but they deliver classic lines like "Wolfman's got nards" and "you guys are chicken shits" with ease. There are tons of laughs and the action sequences are still pretty damn thrilling. Plus there are a ton of little touches that always crack me up like Sean's "Stephen King Rules" T-shirt and Eugene's letter to the "army men" about the monsters in his room. The Monster Squad original theme song to close out the film is just icing on the cake. This is obviously a better film if you grew up with it, but I fully believe that those seeing it for the first time now will find at least something they like about it. It comes highly recommended.
Funny or Scary: If you're a little kid watching both. If you're older then still be smiling and chuckling throughout.
Funniest Scene: "Wolfman's Got Nards." Also Eugene's letter.
Overall Corpse Rating: 8 kid friendly corpses.

Halloween Bash...With Reed Rothchild...Sitcoms are worse than Ke$ha.

...this show just sucks hard. It's about two friends who live in Holliston, Ma and host a horror review cable access show. The only horror aspects of the show are their reviews of fake films and the occasional appearance by a B horror movie star that shows up in a random Family Guy style flashback or dream sequence. The show is more or less a shitty sitcom complete with a laugh track and the main character (Adam) pining over his high school girlfriend. I don't think I laughed once and all of the gore dream sequences sucked hard. The special effects were awful, but not so awful they were good. Dee Snider as their boss at the station was a nice touch and Oderus from Gwar's appearance was pretty cool, but otherwise this was the longest 40 minutes of television I've sat through in a long time.
Funny or Scary: Neither, but boy does it try to be!
Funniest Scene: When Oderus Urungus shows up, not because the scene was particularly good, but because it reminded me of jamming out to Gwar cd's in like 8th grade that me and my friend John got for free from Columbia House.
Overall Corpse Rating: 3 bored as shit corpses.

Halloween Bash With Reed Rothchild...VHS
Alright so this is my fourth time doing this. In case you're not one of my ten readers, basically every October I watch 31 horror films and review them on here. Sometimes I'll throw a TV show on for good measure or even a horror related documentary. Why do I do this you ask? Well besides the fact that I'm a huge nerd-I think it's fun to watch a bunch of films from a specific genre and review them. Also, I do this for you. This way if you're looking for a horror movie to watch with the lady and maybe get a handy as well then this is the place for you. Why do I give you so much? Because I fucking love you! Now please get off of my lawn so I can do the damn thing.
My first impression of this film is that it is a fucking blast. Nearly all of the vignettes work well and they are all short enough that they never over stay their welcome. The violence is really out there and the effects look terrific. The scenarios all start of pretty generic, but I honestly could not have predicted where any of them were going. This had all of my favorite horror movie components- gore, great effects, creative writing, and most importantly a slew of holy shit moments (loyal readers know how much I love my holy shit moments). Once you get past how the shitty the picture looks (mostly due the stylized VHS look) there's a lot to love about this one. The cast and crew were clearly having the time of their lives when they made this and it really shines through on the screen. The acting can be a bit meh at times, but the scary surprises were plentiful and the film provides a little something for horror fans of all varieties. There was only one vignette that I didn't really enjoy out of the five and even that wasn't horrible. I can see this one becoming a cult favorite for years to come.
Funny or Scary: Both, which as most of you know is how I roll. Most of the "tapes" start of with comedy to lull you in since each vignette follows twenty somethings getting into shenanigans Then the tension builds resulting in a killer climax filled with blood, scares, and all around fun holy shit moments.
Scariest Scene: When Lilly totally loses it and transforms in the motel room. It's absolutely brutal the way she handles the two guys in there and scene right before was dripping with tension. Just an all around wonderfully done horror scene.
Overall Corpse Rating: 8 corpses that are not scared into using VHS for life.

Funny or Scary: This one leans heavily on the scary/disturbing side. I felt uncomfortable on more than one occasion.
Scariest Scene: Either when Josh ventures out of the basement for the first (and only) time and finds what has become of Wendi or when Sam brings back an unwilling Marilyn to his bunker.
Overall Corpse Rating: 6 slightly bored but ultimately impressed rape corpses.
